The world of cycling is mourning the death of Finlay Tarling, one of Britain’s rising stars. The 19-year-old rider died this Friday, August 14, during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal, in an accident that occurred while he was competing in the race between Melgaço and Fafe.
Tarling, a native of Wales, rode for the NSN Development Team and was taking part in the 87th edition of the traditional Portuguese race. The accident occurred with a little over 20 kilometers to go to the finish in Fafe.
How the accident that ended Finlay Tarling’s life unfolded
According to Portuguese media outlets, Tarling was riding along the course when he was struck by a vehicle that was not part of the race and that was moving in the opposite direction. The cyclist received medical assistance at the scene, but he could not be saved.
The circumstances allowing the vehicle to enter the course are still under investigation. According to early reports, it was a light commercial vehicle and the driver had entered the road without realizing that the race was still underway. The investigation is also examining the safety conditions and traffic control at the scene.
