Reasons Behind Sofía Gala and Diego Tuñón’s Separation Revealed More Than 16 Years After Breakup (Father of Her Daughter Helena)

22 August 2026

Sofía Gala Castiglione and Diego Tuñón built a love story that began when she was barely 17 years old and he, the Babasónicos keyboardist, was 14 years older. The relationship progressed quickly: they began living together, and in October 2008 they became parents of Helena, the actress’s first daughter.

For several years they kept a relatively low profile and, in interviews, Sofía spoke about her partner and motherhood naturally. But in 2010 rumors began circulating about a crisis between them. In June of that year, various media talked about a wear that would have put at risk a relationship of more than five years.

A relationship that began when Sofía Gala was 17 years old

The story had begun in 2004. At that time, Sofía was very young and Tuñón already had a solid career as a musician with Babasónicos. According to journalistic reconstructions of the era, after they began dating they decided to live together and were building a life in common.

In 2008 Helena arrived. Sofía was 21 when she became a mother and, years later, she recalled that moment as a true turning point in her life.

“At 21 I was a baby. With my daughter we grew up together. I learned to be a mother and I learned to be a woman with her,” she said in an interview with LA NACION.

The birth of their daughter signified a new stage for both, but it also involved balancing family life with two careers that demanded a lot of time and movement.

Rumors of a crisis: jealousy and little time together

The first information that allows reconstructing what was happening appeared publicly in June 2010, when some media began to talk about a relationship crisis.

According to Ciudad Magazine, people close to the couple attributed part of the wear to Diego’s jealousy over the nude scenes Sofía starred in in The Anatomist, the play directed by José María Muscari that the actress performed in at the Regina Theatre.

But that would not be the only problem.

The same version noted that Sofía was very dedicated to her daughter and to the theatre, while Tuñón had to travel for Babasónicos’ performances. That combination would have significantly reduced the time they could share as a couple.

Another media outlet of the time, Minuto Uno, concurred that the lack of time together and the actress’s scenes in the stage play would have generated tension between them.

There is, however, an important detail: at that moment the couple did not publicly confirm a crisis. In fact, the journalistic versions were presented as rumors and they denied them.

Therefore, those elements can be understood as the reasons circulating at that moment, but not as an official explanation of the breakup.

The separation arrived in July 2010

A few weeks after the rumors began circulating, the relationship ended. Sofía Gala and Diego Tuñón separated in July 2010, after more than five years together and with Helena, who was a little over a year old.

The breakup occurred amid a period of intense exposure for Sofía. Shortly after, the actress was romantically linked with Luis Ortega, in a relationship that also drew media attention.

But beyond the versions that had surrounded the end of the couple, over time it became clear that the sentimental separation did not mean the end of the family bond.

The appearance of Julieta Cardinali and an important clarification

Two years later, in 2012, Diego Tuñón returned to the pages of show business due to his relationship with Julieta Cardinali.

The actress and the musician started dating after meeting through mutual friends. The first public pictures of the couple appeared in November of that year, when they were photographed together in Palermo.

The appearance of Cardinali inevitably raised questions about what Sofía Gala thought. However, her response was decisive and, above all, serves to place the chronology: the romance between Diego and Julieta occurred more than two years after the separation of Sofía and the musician.

“I’m happy that Diego is in a relationship, it makes me very glad for him. He is the father of my daughter and I adore him.” said Sofía at the time.

She also made clear that she did not have a friendship with Cardinali, although she knew her and had a good impression of her.

Therefore, there are no elements to affirm that Julieta Cardinali was the cause of the separation between Sofía and Diego. When that romance began, they had been separated for more than two years.

“When I separate, I separate”

In another interview from that era, Sofía was even more direct when asked about her ex’s new relationship.

When I separate, I separate. This business of ‘that man is mine’ isn’t like that,” she stated, making clear that for her the romantic story with Tuñón had been left behind.

Her only concern was related to Helena, especially because Diego had started a new relationship and Cardinali was also a mother of Charo, her daughter with Andrés Calamaro. Sofía said that both girls got along well and that as long as Helena was happy, she was at ease.

The actress even described Diego in a very affectionate way: “He is the father of my daughter and I adore him.”

Over the years, they managed to rebuild the bond

The story did not end with the 2010 separation. With time, Sofía and Diego managed to build a close relationship as parents of Helena.

In 2014, Sofía said she got along “super well” with the father of her daughter and that they cared for each other a lot.

But it was in a later interview with LA NACION where she offered one of the most meaningful definitions about the bond they had managed to build after the breakup.

Sofía explained that she had reconstituted the relationship with Tuñón and that she considered him her friend. And she summed it up from a vantage point very different from that of a rival ex-couple: “I love him too. He is the man I chose to have my daughter with and I consider him my friend.”

She even said that her then-partner, Julián Della Paolera, had raised Helena alongside her and that Diego also had a good relationship with Dante, the son Sofía later had.

Thus, that relationship which had begun when Sofía was barely a teenager ended up transforming, over the years, into a family bond centered around Helena.

A separation crossed by each one’s moment

More than 16 years later, there is no public statement from Sofía Gala or Diego Tuñón that establishes a single reason for the breakup. What can be reconstructed from the 2010 publications is a scenario of wear marked by the lack of shared time, the work demands of both, and rumors of jealousy linked to Sofía’s theater work.

The separation came shortly after, but the bond between them evolved in another way: they left the couple and kept their role as Helena’s parents.

And that seems to be, finally, the least known part of that love story: what ended in 2010 was not the family they had formed, but the couple’s relationship.
