Highland Reborn, a production that explores the creative potential of upcycling. Based on vintage garments and discarded textiles, the stylist Gime Padial and the designer Anca Moncar built three looks where the past becomes the starting point of a new story.
A kilt skirt that ceases to be a skirt. A suede jacket that becomes a jumpsuit. A curtain that finds a second chance as a party dress. In Highland Reborn, nothing disappears: everything transforms.
The production starts from a simple but powerful idea. Each garment holds a story and, instead of being concluded, can become the beginning of another. Inspired by the tartan tradition and a contemporary view of luxury, the pieces were dismantled, reinterpreted, and reconstructed to give rise to a collection where design is born from what already exists.
When a friendship becomes a creative idea
Behind the production are the fashion stylist and producer Gime Padial and the apparel designer and UBA lecturer Anca Moncar, a duo that decided to take their professional bond one step further.
“This project started from a friendship we have with Anca. She is an apparel designer, a professor at UBA, and I am a fashion stylist and producer. She always designs dresses for events or productions and we began working together on editorials,” Padial explains.
And she adds: “This idea of starting to create new pieces and giving new life to garments we have in my styling archive emerged. These projects began to arise for me, which I hope will be the first of many.”
A kilt skirt transformed into a completely new piece
The first design was born from an original Scottish kilt. Its leather strips and buckles, far from being hidden, became the closure system for the corset, while the various scraps found a new place on the hat and cape that complete the styling.
The result preserves the identity of the original garment, but reinterprets it from an entirely different silhouette, proving that design can also arise from redefining what already exists.
When a curtain becomes a dress
Perhaps the most unexpected transformation of the collection. A textile originally designed for the home left behind its initial function to become a dress with great volume and Sculptural spirit.
As a nod to the overall concept of Highland Reborn, only a detail in Scottish fabric was incorporated to dialogue with the rest of the collection. The oversized XL bow finishes defining a piece where the emphasis is on the material’s transformation and the creativity of the process.
A suede ensemble that found another silhouette
In this case, the starting point was a suede ensemble. The jacket was transformed into a playsuit with defined lines, while the fabric from the original skirt allowed the construction of balloon sleeves, the absolute protagonists of the design.
The proposal shows how the same amount of material can give rise to a completely different piece when the way of looking at a garment is changed.
More than upcycling, a new way of understanding design
The Highland Reborn production offers a perspective that goes beyond simply recycling garments. Its starting point is the idea of preserving what already carries identity to imagine new uses, new silhouettes, and new stories.
Because, sometimes, true luxury does not lie in wearing something new, but in discovering the potential that has always been there.
