An experience that fused cinema, fashion, and entertainment, allowing us to witness from the inside the literary phenomenon’s arrival on the big screen.

What Verity: The Shadow of a Deception Is About

Directed by Michael Showalter, the film starts from a premise as unsettling as it is gripping. Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson) is a writer at a challenging point in her career when she receives an offer hard to refuse: to complete the manuscripts of Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway), a successful author who was left unable to continue writing after an accident.

To do so, Lowen moves into the Crawford home alongside Jeremy (Josh Hartnett), Verity’s husband. But as she reviews the writer’s material, she discovers disturbing autobiographical pages that pose a question that runs through the entire film: how much of what she’s reading is fiction and how much is truth?

From there, Verity plunges into the territory of the psychological thriller, weaving desire, obsession, family secrets, and manipulation. The film deliberately plays with the viewer’s perception, compelling them to distrust its own characters until the very end.

Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and a Thriller That Invites Debate

The international reception began divided, a fate that seems almost inevitable for an adaptation of a literary phenomenon that had already sparked discussions among its readers. Among those who found virtues in the project, its entertainment value stood out in particular: some critics noted its potential to become an ideal experience to watch with others and discuss afterward, while Anne Hathaway was one of the standout names for the energy she brings to Verity.

And perhaps this is one of the film’s keys: rather than seeking easy answers, it invites viewers into an uncomfortable game where each new revelation reshapes what we thought we knew.

For those who read the book, there’s also inevitably another challenge: to discover how the big screen reinterprets one of its most discussed elements, the enduring dispute between “the manuscript” and “the letter”, which even its protagonists have revisited during the film’s international promotion.

After its stop at the Buenos Aires avant premiere, “Verity: The Shadow of a Deception” opens on October 1st in Argentine cinemas, distributed locally by Sony Pictures.
