Jai Arrow returned to the Sydney turf to fulfill a goal that had been interrupted by his diagnosis. The Australian rugby league player, 31 years old, played his 100th match with the South Sydney Rabbitohs and was given a farewell that few will forget: 41,513 people filled Allianz Stadium and greeted his entrance with an ovation and the chant of “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Arrow, visibly moved, was accompanied by his family and teammates on a day that marked the end of his professional career.
Two months earlier, the player had announced his immediate retirement from professional rugby after receiving a diagnosis of motor neuron disease (MND). He had undergone months of testing and treatment and explained that his symptoms had begun to affect various aspects of his daily life. In a later interview, he also revealed that his speech had been affected.
Since then, Arrow chose to make his experience public and turn it into a awareness campaign. “I want to help other people who are battling this disease,” he said in July, when he turned 31 and Australian rugby organized a day to raise funds for the fight against MND.
