Sergio Lapegüe Victim of Scam After Daughter’s Identity Theft

25 August 2026

During the broadcast of La Mañana de Lape, journalist Sergio Lapegüe recounted the attempted scam he suffered via his cellphone, after someone pretended to be his daughter Micaela, who is pregnant.

According to him, he received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number that supposedly belonged to his daughter. In the conversation, the person claimed that she had to switch to another phone because hers had broken.

Hi dad, my phone broke, I’ll be using this number for now,” read the message the journalist received.

The situation quickly drew his attention, though at first he thought it could really be a problem with his daughter’s phone. He also had plans to meet with her that same day to celebrate his partner Tomás’s birthday.

How Sergio Lapegüe Discovered It Was a Scam

The deception grew more serious when Lapegüe noticed a particular detail: the number from which they were writing shared the same profile photo that Micaela used on WhatsApp. “In other words, someone took her WhatsApp photo,” the journalist explained, concerned about the possibility that someone had accessed his daughter’s personal information.

First I got scared, I told my wife… I said, ‘My daughter’s phone was stolen,’ then they take money from you because it’s dangerous… I blocked it immediately,” he recalled about his reaction.

The concern grew since his wife was trying to reach Tomás, Micaela’s partner, but he too was not answering calls.

“And on top of that she’s pregnant, two weeks to go…,” Lapegüe said, referring to his daughter’s nearing the end of her pregnancy.

Finally, the journalist and his wife decided to contact Micaela on her usual number directly. She replied and confirmed that she was fine and that she hadn’t suffered any theft or issues with her phone.
