Tragedy in Jujuy: Mother Dies and Daughter Is Brain-Dead on Family Vacation

20 August 2026

What had begun as a family trip to explore the landscapes of northern Argentina ended in a tragedy that forever altered the life of a family from Alejandro Korn. Among the five members traveling in the vehicle were Silvia Rosana Amaro, 58, and her daughter Lorena, 33.

Mother and daughter had set out on vacation with three other relatives. They had arrived in Salta a few days earlier and planned to visit various sites in the province and in Jujuy. For transportation, they had rented a Toyota SW4.

But the trip ended abruptly at the Lipán Pass, when the SUV left the roadway and plunged about 80 meters down a ravine.

Silvia, the mother who died in the accident

Silvia Rosana Amaro was 58 years old and hailed from Alejandro Korn, in the San Vicente district of Buenos Aires Province.

She traveled with her partner, Narciso González, 60, her sons Favio and Lorena, and Augusto Coda, Lorena’s partner.

The impact was incredibly violent, and when rescue teams reached the vehicle, they found Silvia deceased.

The woman died as a consequence of the serious injuries caused by the fall. Her passing was the first of the two blows that the family would endure after the crash.

Lorena, the daughter who remains hospitalized

Lorena Paola González, 33, is Silvia’s daughter and one of the four people who survived the derailment.

The young woman was transferred to Pablo Soria Hospital in San Salvador de Jujuy, along with the other occupants of the pickup. Her condition was critical from the moment of rescue due to the serious injuries she had sustained.

As hours passed, the situation worsened. Sources at Pablo Soria Hospital confirmed that Lorena suffered brain death.

In this way, the family found themselves facing an especially painful situation: while bidding farewell to Silvia, they also had to confront the news of their daughter’s irreversible condition.

A vacation that ended in tragedy

The family had journeyed from Alejandro Korn toward northern Argentina with the aim of enjoying a few days of rest.

They had arrived in Salta roughly two days before the accident and had rented a Toyota SW4 to explore the region.

Their route took them to National Route 52, one of the roads that cross the Jujuy puna. In the Lipán Pass area, at kilometer 30, the derailment occurred.

For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway and tumbled down a slope of about 80 meters.

Favio was at the wheel and does not remember how the accident happened

Among the survivors is Favio Hernán González, 31, Silvia’s son and Lorena’s brother.

According to information released by local media, Favio was the one driving the pickup at the time of the crash. The young man does not remember how the ravine fall occurred: he only recalls taking a curve and, later, the rescuers attempting to extract them from the vehicle.

Also injured were Narciso González, Silvia’s partner, and Augusto Coda, Lorena’s partner.

The four survivors were taken to Pablo Soria Hospital for medical attention.

The investigation to determine what triggered the fall

While the family endures this moment, the judiciary is trying to determine what happened in the seconds preceding the accident.

At this time, it has not been established whether the SUV suffered any malfunction, whether a maneuver caused a loss of control, or whether the road’s characteristics had any influence on the derailment.

The investigation will need to reconstruct the crash mechanics and determine why the Toyota SW4 left the road and ended up at the bottom of the ravine.

The tragedy also brought renewed attention to the Lipán Pass, a mountain road known for its curves, steep gradients, and drop-offs.

For this family, however, that sightseeing trip will forever be linked to a journey that began as a vacation and ended with Silvia’s death and the dramatic health condition of Lorena.
