Sorrow in Ecuador as First Lady Lavinia Valbonesi’s Third Son Dies

17 August 2026

In the last hours the painful news emerged that Lavinia Valbonesi, First Lady of Ecuador and wife of President Daniel Noboa, lost the child she was expecting with the president. The baby was named Stefano Noboa Valbonesi.

The news was officially announced by Ecuador’s Minister of Government, Nataly Morillo, who reported that the First Lady experienced a complication during the pregnancy that required an emergency intervention.

“With deep sorrow I inform the country that the presidential family is experiencing the painful loss of their third child, Stefano Noboa Valbonesi,” Morillo said in a statement posted on X.

The official also expressed her condolences to the presidential couple and their families for the loss.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the First Lady and to the President of the Republic,” she said in the message, which also highlighted the support of the Ecuadorian Government during this moment of deep sorrow.

As part of the official mourning, the minister announced that for three days the flag at Carondelet Palace will remain at half-mast, as a tribute to the baby and as a sign of respect toward the presidential family.

The Family of Daniel Noboa and Lavinia Valbonesi

Lavinia Valbonesi is a businesswoman, nutritionist, and influencer. The First Lady and Daniel Noboa met in 2019, when she began working as the nutritional adviser to the then-entrepreneur.

The couple married in August 2021 and, since November 2023, Valbonesi has held the role of First Lady of Ecuador, after Noboa took office following the elections that year.

La pareja se casó en agosto de 2021 y, desde noviembre de 2023, Valbonesi ocupa el rol de primera dama de Ecuador, luego de que Noboa asumiera la Presidencia tras ganar las elecciones de ese año.

Daniel Noboa already had a daughter, Luisa Noboa Goldbaum, from his first marriage. Together with Lavinia Valbonesi, the president welcomed Álvaro (2022) and Furio (2024) Noboa Valbonesi. Stefano was the couple’s third child and Daniel Noboa’s fourth son.

The news of the baby’s loss sparked shock across Ecuador and drew numerous expressions of solidarity toward the First Lady, the president, and the rest of the family.
