Eclipses are, at heart, new moons or full moons with an extra: they occur when, in addition to the Sun and the Moon aligning, that alignment falls very close to the lunar nodes, the two points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s. At that point, one of the two is obscured by the other: that is the visual effect that gives the phenomenon its name.
Sounds quite grandiose, but the truth is that we have, at least, four eclipses per year. So my advice is to take it with more natural calm, without denying the enormous power they hold in our life. Of course there will be some that affect you more than others, according to the configuration of your own natal chart.

What is, in plain terms, an eclipse?

On August 12, at 17:47 (Greenwich time), the eclipse reaches its maximum at 20° of Leo. It will be total, although we will not be able to view it from here: the path of totality crosses Greenland, Iceland, and the northern part of Spain, the first total eclipse to cross continental European soil since 1999.
There is one detail that changes the tone of the entire event: this eclipse occurs adjacent to the South Node.
