After the much-talked-about greeting between Lionel Messi and Sofi Martínez in the mixed zone, the journalist decided to speak on air and clear up the rumors circulating on social media about a supposed distance between them.
While Telefe was wrapping up coverage, her colleague Manu Olivari referred to the moment that quickly went viral. “What a lovely greeting, Sofi,” he said live. It was then that the journalist chose to break the silence and address the rumors directly.
“I really value the gesture Lionel Messi showed. I value it a lot because that greeting has to do with some noises that are generated during the week that make no sense whatsoever, they’re all lies,” she stated firmly.

In that same vein, Martínez explained why she had preferred not to respond earlier to those versions: “Sometimes I’d rather say nothing because I know that by working, you show that everything is fine and that there’s nothing of what they say.”
The message behind Messi’s greeting
In the closing part of her reflection, Martínez emphasized that the Argentine captain had no obligation to publicly clarify anything, but he nonetheless decided to approach her and greet her before the interview.
“And he doesn’t have to greet to clarify anything and yet he did it simply to make it clear that obviously there is no problem and that we’re doing our job as always,” she asserted.

The episode occurred seconds after the brief exchange between both in the mixed zone, when Messi threw a light-hearted line at her: “I greet you, because if I look at you, if I don’t look at you, you know? If I look at you because I look at you, if I greet you because I greet you.”
The remark, quickly virally circulated, was interpreted by many users as an indirect reference to the rumors circulating after the previous match.
