The bond between Lautaro and football was born at home. His father, Mario Martínez, was a professional footballer and from a very young age he was tied to the sport. Born in Punta Alta and raised in Bahía Blanca, he began playing in local matches until a scout spotted his qualities and brought him to Villa Mitre, where he played as a defender.
At only 14 he played his first Reserve game and at 16 he debuted in the First Division. Throughout his career he passed through different clubs, achieved promotions, and became a reference within the institutions where he played.
But for Lautaro and his brothers, Mario was more than a player: he was the first teacher who taught them the value of commitment, discipline, and passion for the shirt.

Luisa was remembered in Bahía Blanca as a lethal goal-scorer and one of the few women who played football in that era. At home she shared that passion with her husband, Mario Oscar, Lautaro’s grandfather, who also was a footballer and later continued to be involved in the sport as a referee.
Thus, the love for the ball was passed down through the generations: first through his grandparents, then through his father, and finally to Lautaro, who transformed that inheritance into an international career.
Lautaro’s childhood between fields and locker rooms
Although, due to a generational gap, Lautaro does not have memories of his grandparents playing, he grew up watching every detail of his father’s career. From a young age he accompanied Mario to the pitches, watched training sessions, tactical talks, and even the rituals surrounding professional football.
“Even from that moment I realized they were going to carry on their grandparents’ and father’s legacy,” Mario recalled about his children.
Along with his brother Alan, Lautaro began his football schooling in Bahía Blanca, Punta Alta, and Olavarría. While Alan followed his father’s path into defense, Lautaro quickly realized that he possessed different traits: power, proficiency with both feet, and a special flair for scoring goals.
In his early years he even earned a very particular nickname: “Caniggia”, due to his physical resemblance to the legendary Argentine forward.
The effort behind the dream of playing for the National Team
The Martínez family supported every stage of Lautaro’s growth. His parents, grandparents, and siblings were present during the long hours of youth football, at trainings and in the most important moments of his development.
His mother Karina also played a fundamental role: she brought meals, prepared the pastafrola, and spent hours at the training grounds in the afternoons.
Lautaro, furthermore, stood out for his commitment from a young age. He asked to eat pasta before playing, organized his time to meet his training schedule, and avoided distractions when he had a goal ahead.
