The Queen Camilla spoke candidly for the first time about one of the most difficult moments she shared with King Charles III: the days following the monarch’s cancer diagnosis, when the royal family had not yet made the news public.
The confession came during a conversation with Laura Lee, director of the Maggie’s charity, which provides emotional support to people with cancer and their families. The meeting took place on the occasion of the organization’s 30th anniversary and was recorded at Clarence House, the London residence of the royals.
Camilla recalled especially an official engagement that occurred in January 2024, when she opened a new Maggie’s center at the Royal Free Hospital in London. At that moment, she already knew that Charles III had been diagnosed with cancer and would begin treatment, but she still could not speak publicly about the situation.
“No one could say anything”: the difficult moment Camilla faced
“I remember going to Maggie’s just after the King’s illness had been diagnosed. No one could say anything at that moment. It was quite difficult,” the queen admitted.
The situation carried an even greater emotional weight because Camilla was surrounded by cancer patients and families going through similar experiences, while she carried a personal worry that she could not share.
The sovereign said she even came close to speaking about what was happening, but chose to stay silent.
“I was about to say something, but I felt that it wasn’t the right moment,” she explained.
According to her account, that experience also allowed her to understand even more deeply the importance of supportive spaces for those facing a cancer illness.
“I looked at everyone who was suffering and all the people around them, and I think that made me realize even more the importance of these places,” she noted.

King Charles III’s cancer was made public in February 2024
The diagnosis of King Charles III was officially announced by Buckingham Palace on February 5, 2024, after the monarch had already begun his treatment.

To date, the British royal household has not publicly disclosed what type of cancer the king is suffering from.
More than two years after the announcement, Charles III continues to receive medical treatment. Buckingham Palace has stated that his health status continues to evolve positively.
Camilla spoke about her new reality alongside the King
Camilla also referred to what it meant for her to move from accompanying others who were facing cancer to living the illness up close within her own family.
The queen has been Maggie’s president since 2008 and for years had heard the stories of numerous patients and their families. Yet she never imagined that reality would come to her own home.
“Suddenly, they diagnose your husband, and you think: ‘My God’,” she said.
And she explained that, at that moment, she realized she had to support and care for her husband while trying to understand a situation that was completely new for both of them.
Her testimony offered, for the first time, a glimpse into how she lived those early days when she had to keep private a news item that directly affected her family, while continuing to fulfill her official duties.
