Met Gala 2027: Theme Confirmed and Promises an Unconventional Red Carpet

6 November 2026

A pair of jeans, a white T-shirt, a puffer jacket. Also a piece of paper, plastic, or metal. Common elements, almost invisible due to how accustomed we are to seeing them, will be the starting point of the upcoming Met Gala.

The Costume Institute announced that the theme of its 2027 exhibition will be “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday”, which could be translated as “extraORDINARY: fashion and the poetics of the everyday”.

And the idea is as simple as it is appealing: to discover what happens when a designer takes something familiar and turns it into an unexpected piece.

De qué se trata el tema de la Met Gala 2027

The proposal invites us to look again at what we have before us every day. Can a T-shirt become a gala dress? Can jeans be transformed into a museum-worthy piece? What happens when paper, plastic or metal land in the hands of a great designer?

The exhibition will show how creativity, fabrication, artisanal craft and experimentation can completely change the meaning of a garment or a common material.

But it will also focus on something very close to us: the relationship we build with our clothes. Because a garment doesn’t mean the same thing when it is brand new as after having been worn, combined and cared for over many years. In that journey also appear memories, stains and small personal stories.

Una alfombra roja llena de posibilidades

The official dress code has not yet been announced, but the theme already allows imagining a red carpet very different.

We could see dresses created from T-shirts, haute couture silhouettes made in denim, puffer jackets turned into sculptural pieces or designs built with materials that would normally end up discarded.

There will also be room for upcycling, reuse and artisanal techniques. This time, impact will not depend solely on the luxury or volume of a gown: the big question will be what a designer can do with what everyone knows.

The exhibition will be organized by Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute, together with Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben. It will bring together pieces from the museum’s collection, special loans and new acquisitions.

Cuándo será la Met Gala 2027

The event will take place on Monday, May 3, 2027 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

As every year, the gala will raise funds for the Costume Institute, which finds in this event its main annual source of funding.

The exhibition will open to the public a few days later, on May 9, and can be visited until January 9, 2028.

It is still unknown who the hosts will be and what exact cue guests will be asked to interpret. Those announcements will come later.

Met Gala 2027: cuál es el nuevo tema y qué significa

Por qué cambió el tema original

The story of this edition took a turn. Initially, the Costume Institute had announced an exhibition dedicated to John Galliano, titled “John Galliano: Horizons”.

However, the museum and the designer announced in August 2026 that the project would not go ahead. The Met then promised to present a new proposal to occupy that space.

The result is “extraORDINARY”, a theme that seems much closer and that could give rise to some of the most creative interpretations of recent years.

Because, this time, the fantasy will not start in a tale, a era, or a work of art. It will begin with that pair of jeans, that T-shirt or that jacket that anyone could have in their closet.
