The World Cup Final produced one of the most moving images in the recent history of Argentine football. After the 1-0 defeat to Spain in the second half of extra time, Lionel Messi broke down in tears on the turf of MetLife Stadium in New York.
The Argentine captain, who played in his sixth World Cup and perhaps the last, could not hide his sadness after a tournament that once again saw him as both the footballing and emotional leader of the Argentina national team.
Lionel Messi’s Tears After the Final Whistle
As soon as the referee blew the final whistle, cameras captured Messi seated on the turf, his gaze unfocused and visibly moved. Later, he walked slowly across the pitch, trying to hold back his tears.
The Rosario-born star received embraces from several teammates during the awards ceremony. He also greeted the rest of the squad as the Argentine fans bid him farewell with applause and chants of encouragement.
The scene reflected the emotional weight of an extraordinary career and the closing of an unforgettable chapter wearing the Albiceleste shirt at the World Cups.
Minutes later, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) released a special tribute to the captain. “Your tears are ours, Captain 👑🇦🇷 You gave us the greatest joys of our lives. Thank you for your dedication, for the magic, and for giving your all until the very last second 🙌 We will love you forever, Leo! 🩵🤍,” read alongside an image of him visibly distressed.
