An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 shook southern Spain during the early hours of this Saturday, August 15, and generated moments of great concern among residents in several towns. The seismic event occurred at 1:04 a.m. local time, and had its epicenter near Otura, in the province of Granada.
According to data released by the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), the quake occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometers and was felt in various parts of the Spanish territory. The tremor also reached areas such as Murcia, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and Madrid.
So far, there have been no reported fatalities. However, the earthquake caused material damage, landslides and collapses in some locations, in addition to affecting streets and buildings. The falling debris also created complications on some roadways.
