Harry and Meghan Return to the UK: Why They Came Back and What Their Relationship with the Windsors Will Be

21 August 2026

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing to return to the United Kingdom with their children, Archie and Lilibet, six years after leaving the country and starting a new life in California. According to British media, the family will settle in a private residence outside London and the kids would start classes at a British school in September.

The decision marks a new chapter for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and opens a series of questions. What prompted their return? How will they sustain their financial life in the United Kingdom? Will they draw closer to the royal family again? And, above all, what will become of the bond between Harry and his brother, Prince William?

There is one certainty: returning to the United Kingdom does not mean becoming active members of the royal family again.

Harry and Meghan are not returning to institutional life

When the couple stepped back from their official duties in 2020, the so-called Sandringham Agreement set out the terms of their exit from institutional life. Harry and Meghan stopped performing official duties and became financially independent.

Therefore, the move does not imply a reentry into the Crown’s schedule. They will not resume official duties nor live in a royal residence, and simply resettling in the United Kingdom does not make them active members of the monarchy.

Nor is there, at least for now, any intermediate arrangement that would allow them to combine royal functions with private commercial activities. That possibility had been ruled out during the 2020 negotiations.

The return, then, should be understood as a personal and family decision, not an institutional comeback.

What brought them back?

After six years in California, Harry and Meghan built a life far from the obligations of the Crown. There they developed audiovisual projects, business deals, and their own ventures.

Meghan focused on her lifestyle brand, As Ever, while Harry remained involved with various charities and the Invictus Games.

Now, the family seems to be seeking a new balance between that independence and a closer connection to the United Kingdom. The enrollment of Archie and Lilibet in a British school is one of the most concrete signals that the return would not be conceived merely as a temporary stay.

The decision also brings them physically closer again to Harry’s family after years of distance.

Charles and Harry: a relationship that begins to rebuild

The return could particularly benefit the bond between Harry and his father, King Charles III.

In July, they met at Highgrove after several years of estrangement. The rapprochement also allowed Charles to have contact with his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet.

The possibility of Harry returning to live in the United Kingdom opens the door to new family gatherings and could facilitate a closer father-son relationship.

But a possible reconciliation with Charles does not necessarily mean Harry will mend all his ties with the Windsors.

William, the big unknown

The relationship between Harry and his brother William remains far more complex.

In recent years, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex publicly aired numerous differences with the royal family. The Oprah Winfrey interview, the Netflix documentary, and Harry’s memoir Spare exposed conflicts that for decades had remained private.

Harry shared details of his relationship with William and even recounted a fight between them. He also issued strong criticisms toward other members of the royal family.

Therefore, the move does not automatically entail a reconciliation between the siblings.

Geographic proximity could foster an approach, but it could also make differences more visible. Harry will be physically much closer to William, who is destined to become king, though he will remain outside the institutional framework of the Crown.

Some analysts even warn of the risk of a kind of “two cuts”: William’s, as future monarch, and Harry’s, settled back in the UK with Meghan but living an independent life.

The money: how they will sustain their new life

Another major question concerns their finances.

Since stepping back from official duties, Harry and Meghan have developed various income streams tied to their private ventures. They produced audiovisual content, signed commercial deals, and built their own brand.

Meghan could continue developing As Ever, while Harry would maintain his commitments to charitable organizations and the Invictus Games.

Returning to the United Kingdom does not involve recovering public funding or Crown-derived income. The couple will continue to depend on their private activities.

The move also reopens scrutiny of the performance of the projects they developed during their American phase and raises questions about whether the return signals a shift in the life plan they had built in California.

Security, another pending issue

The safety of the family will be another major challenge.

Harry lost the police protection scheme he had as an active member of the royal family after stepping back from his duties and subsequently began a legal battle to regain an adequate level of security when visiting the UK.

Over the years, the prince has expressed concern about taking his children to the country without sufficient guarantees.

Now, with a move planned alongside Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet, the topic again takes on particular importance. Public details about the family’s security arrangement have not yet been fully disclosed.

The Sussexes will also have to balance their desire to protect their children’s privacy with the enormous media attention that every move attracts.

A new life between California and the United Kingdom

The return does not necessarily mean cutting off the life they built in the United States.

Harry and Meghan will retain their projects and professional commitments, while the United Kingdom will again occupy a central place in their daily lives. For Archie and Lilibet, the change will be especially meaningful: both will begin British education after having grown up mainly in California.

Harry will also continue to travel for his commitments related to the Invictus Games and other organizations.

Thus, the family could be split between two worlds: the private and commercial life they built in the United States and the enormous exposure that comes with returning to the United Kingdom as part of one of the world’s most famous families.

Six years after the so-called “Megxit,” Harry and Meghan return to the United Kingdom. But they do so on their own terms: without official duties, with their own projects and businesses, and still with several family wounds left to heal.

The real challenge begins now: to determine whether the distance that for years separated the Sussexes from the Windsors can, this time, become an opportunity to rebuild some of the ties that were damaged.
