From a Private Neighborhood to a Borrowed House: Paula Chaves Recalls a Tough Moment in the 2000s

Paula Chaves recalled the difficult economic moment her family went through during the early 2000s crisis. On PH, Podemos hablar, she described how she went from living in a private neighborhood in San Isidro to moving with her mother and siblings to a borrowed house in Lobos. Over time, that experience became a lesson she now aims to pass on to her three children.

At fifteen, Paula had to leave behind the life she was living in San Isidro and move with her mother and her siblings to Lobos. The move occurred after her father, who worked in the textile industry, went bankrupt during the early 2000s economic crisis.

“We lived in San Isidro in a private neighborhood, we went to a school with dual schooling, everything. Overnight, my father, who worked in textiles, went bankrupt,” she recalled.

The Move from San Isidro to Lobos During the Crisis

The economic crisis completely changed the family’s routine. Paula explained that they had to move to a house lent by a relative, and there she finished her last years of school. “We moved to Lobos in the year 2000, to a house that my aunt lent us. I was 15, 16 years old. I finished fourth and fifth year at the Lobos National School,” she recalled.

Although she had enjoyed spending time at that house when she was younger, the move represented a sudden change for her. She left behind her school, her friends, and the everyday life she knew in San Isidro.

“When they took me out, it was tremendous, because there was nothing else. We could only say goodbye to our loved ones… at a time when there was only a landline. I didn’t have a phone, so I would go to a payphone in front of my grandmother’s house,” she recalled.

The model also remembered some of the small rituals that emerged during that period. “I would go to my grandmother’s to eat gelatin with apple and artificial sweetener, which she made at night,” she recalled.

With the passage of time, Paula was able to view that experience from a different perspective. What during her adolescence had meant a loss and a difficult transition, over time became a fundamental stage in her personal formation.

“And looking at it now, it was the best thing that happened to me. I think it shaped me as a person, helped me value things, and today I am raising three beings,” she reflected.
