The death of Luisana Schönberger, one of the rising stars of Argentine tennis, shocked the national sport. The 16-year-old girl died in a tragic traffic accident that occurred in the city of Eldorado, Misiones, while travelling as a passenger in a car.
Known to her family and friends as “Luchi”, the athlete had stood out from a very young age for her talent on the courts and was considered one of the brightest prospects of her generation in the province.
How the accident in which Luisana Schönberger died unfolded
Although the news drew attention in recent hours, the crash occurred last Sunday morning, July 12, when a group of youths was returning from celebrating the Argentina national team’s victory over Switzerland in the World Cup. According to reports, an Argentine flag was in the car’s rear window.
The accident happened at kilometer 10 of San Martín Avenue, in Eldorado. Luisana was travelling as a passenger in a Volkswagen Gol that, after colliding with another vehicle, ended up crashing into a tree.
According to information released by the investigation, the car was travelling at high speed behind a Ford Escort. Security cameras included in the file show that the Escort driver managed to dodge a Toyota Corolla that was moving at a slower pace. In contrast, the driver of the Volkswagen Gol could not avoid the impact against the rear of the Corolla.
After the collision, the vehicle lost control, crossed onto the opposite sidewalk and collided violently with a tree.

Luisana died at the scene as a result of the serious injuries sustained. The driver of the car, Renzo Retamozo, 20, also died.
In the back seat were three other youths, who were urgently transferred to SAMIC Hospital with injuries of varying severity.
According to Teleshow, the health center reported that a 17-year-old is hospitalized in intensive care with a guarded prognosis. Another 20-year-old who suffered facial traumas and a fractured humerus, though he is in stable condition. Meanwhile, a 16-year-old adolescent presents fractures in an arm and in the lumbar spine, with favorable evolution.
The images recorded by the security cameras are also being analyzed to determine if the vehicles involved were taking part in a drag race at the moment of the accident, due to the speed at which they were travelling.
As the investigation progresses, the Misiones Police seized a third vehicle that could have participated in the sequence leading up to the crash. Forensic experts are working to reconstruct precisely how the incident occurred and to establish the corresponding responsibilities.

After the news became known, the Argentine Tennis Association expressed its condolences in a statement, recalling the young athlete’s career.
The organization highlighted that Luisana had become one of the nation’s brightest tennis talents thanks to her skill, commitment and dedication from a very young age.

Among her athletic achievements, she had reached the fourth place in the national Sub 10 rankings and the third regional position in Sub 14, results that reflected the growth of a career that was just beginning.
Her passing generated deep distress among administrators, coaches, teammates, and the entire Argentine tennis community, who mourned the athlete who dreamed of a bright future on the circuit.
