A group of 12 students from the Buenos Aires Institute of Technology (ITBA) achieved a milestone for Argentine engineering by clinching the world championship at Drillbotics 2026, an international competition organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).
The team earned the first place in the Physical Mode category, a division that assesses the design, construction, and operation of real drilling equipment. To achieve this, they developed an autonomous drilling robot inspired by the technology used in fields such as Vaca Muerta, one of Argentina’s leading energy hubs.
The 2026 edition marked ITBA’s first participation in Drillbotics, and the result could not have been better. The Argentine team not only debuted in the competition but also managed to prevail against universities with long-standing engineering and technology traditions.
Moreover, it was the only representative from Latin America in the physical modality of the event, where Clausthal University of Technology in Germany and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Norway also took part.
