A Love That Started on Video Calls: China Ansa and Diego Mendoza Reveal How Their Romance Began

13 August 2026

In an interview with Pampita for Infobae, China Ansa and Diego Mendoza revisited the beginnings of their love story and explained how, despite the distance, everyday conversations and video calls were essential to building the bond they maintain today.

The love story began in an unexpected way and thousands of miles apart. When she was working as a journalist in Argentina and he was playing football in Europe, a series of Instagram messages was the starting point of a relationship that, over time, would become a family.

“I was talking with Fernando Carlos, who worked with her on the newscast, I was playing football in Europe,” Mendoza recalled when recounting the moment he first saw the journalist.

According to him, his colleague had recorded a video and, behind it, appeared a “morena” woman who immediately caught his attention. It was then that the former footballer expressed his curiosity to know who she was.

La historia de amor comenzó de una manera inesperada y a miles de kilómetros de distancia.

When Fernando Carlos told China Ansa that Mendoza was asking about her, the journalist suggested that he share her contact so they could meet to have mate. However, she received an unexpected reply: the footballer was in Ibiza.

“What for, you tell me? Why show me the menu if I can’t eat it?” Ansa recalled, laughing about that first approach.

China Ansa and Diego Mendoza began a long-distance friendship

Distance did not prevent a bond from forming between them. Mendoza found a way to reach the journalist through social media and began writing to her. “Since I saw that she was a journalist, I looked up the information here and sent her messages. I embellished a little and some of it was true,” explained the former footballer.

For about eight months, they kept up daily conversations. At that time, both were in other relationships and they shared details of their respective love lives. “We told each other everything, she had her partners here, her boyfriends. And I had mine there, we kept each other informed. We were friends,” he recalled.

However, behind that friendship began to appear another kind of interest. Ansa recalled one of the moments that made her notice Mendoza’s feelings could be different.

On one occasion, she told him she had to stop talking because she was going to meet someone. The footballer’s reply surprised her: “ I won’t tell you to have a good time because it makes me a little jealous,” the journalist recalled.

Video calls, wine and sushi: this is how the romance solidified

As time went by, their conversations became increasingly personal. Although they were still thousands of kilometers apart, they began sharing moments via video calls.

We would video call, drink wine, eat sushi. Each one in their own place,” they recalled about that particular stage of their relationship. The trust between them grew to such a degree that Ansa began opening up about personal issues that made her feel somewhat insecure about a potential in-person meeting.

I was already starting to come clean about my stuff because I would have to see him. And he would always see me wearing a push-up bra, and I wondered: ‘How do I get from here to intimacy?’,” the journalist recounted amid laughter.
