Why the Friends Cast Didn’t Participate in Matthew Perry’s Documentary

6 November 2026

It was inevitable that his absence would draw attention. The new Netflix documentary about Matthew Perry traces his life, his arrival on Friends, his years of success, and the battles with the addictions that he himself chose to discuss publicly. Yet his five co-stars from the show do not appear speaking on camera.

Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer were invited by the production, but chose not to participate. There was no conflict or rejection of the project: director Mary Robertson explained that each person continues to process the loss of their friend in their own way.

The reason the Friends cast decided not to participate

“We know that the Friends cast loves Matthew and that each one is grieving in their own way,” Robertson explained. “We approached them and they decided not to participate.”

The director noted that many of the actor’s closest circles are still trying to understand how and why they lost him. Matthew Perry died on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54.

Speaking publicly about his life also meant returning to his most painful moments. Robertson acknowledged that those who knew him learned to distrust certain accounts because, for years, numerous aspects of his story were treated in sensationalistic or demeaning terms.

Additionally, the people interviewed would not have editorial control over the final product. For some of his loved ones, entrusting such an intimate experience to an external production could be too difficult.

An absence that does not signify distance

The actors do not appear in new interviews, but they are present through Friends’ archival material and the memories of those who took part in the documentary.

Their absence, in a sense, also allows the story not to be centered solely on the phenomenon of the sitcom. The focus is on Matthew: on the man behind Chandler Bing, on his humor, on his relationships, and on the illness he fought for much of his life.

However, it is not confirmed that his former colleagues rejected the invitation specifically to avoid becoming the protagonists. What the director did explain is that they continue to go through the grieving process and that they chose to preserve that part of their relationship with Perry.

The emotional memory of Matthew Perry's funeral

Although the five actors do not speak directly, one of the documentary’s most moving moments helps to understand how close they were.

Mia Perry Bowick, the actor’s sister, remembers that the funeral was small and reserved for family and intimate friends. The Friends cast arrived together.

Jennifer Aniston was the first to approach to embrace her. Afterwards, the five walked up to the casket, holding hands, and stayed around Matthew, crying.

That scene, recounted by his sister, says a lot without the need for another reunion in front of cameras.

"Young man indoors making a humorous, exaggerated face, wearing a grey jacket with leather sleeves. The environment looks like a living room with curtains and patterned furniture in the background. Warm, casual setting."

What the Matthew Perry documentary is about

“The One About Matthew Perry” — a title that nods to the way Friends episodes were named — is a three-episode docuseries released by Netflix.

The production traces the rise of the actor to fame, his years as Chandler Bing, his personal relationships, and his struggle with addictions. It also addresses the investigation into his death, but seeks to go beyond his final days.

Among the testimonies is his sister Mia, who speaks publicly about him, as well as friends, people Perry helped and professionals who worked by his side.

Warren Littlefield, one of the driving forces behind bringing Friends to NBC, and Jeff Strauss, a producer and writer of the first season, also participate. Their memories help reconstruct the moment Perry joined the series and transformed Chandler into one of television’s most beloved characters.

A story that does not shy away from its hardest parts

Robertson defined the documentary as a love letter to Matthew, but clarified that it does not mean presenting a perfect version of him.

The series includes his achievements and his immense talent for comedy, but also his relapses, his contradictions, and the moments when he lost control. A look that, according to the director, is connected to the honesty with which Perry himself spoke about his illness in his memoirs.

His colleagues chose not to revisit that pain publicly. The documentary, meanwhile, tries to place Matthew Perry at the center of his own story: not only as Chandler Bing nor as a man haunted by an addiction, but in all his complexity.
