Eight months after the tragic event that shook the country, the case of Bastián Jerez adds a chapter of deep emotion and hope. On January 11, the nine-year-old boy suffered a serious accident in the seaside town of Pinamar, when he was thrown from the UTV vehicle in which he was riding in his father’s arms and without a seat belt, as he collided head-on with a pickup truck in the dune area known as La Frontera.
As a result of the collision, the child had to undergo a complex medical treatment that included 17 surgical interventions and six months in the intensive care unit, amid family uncertainty and constant social support.
Today, Bastián is making steady progress in his rehabilitation. He has managed to start to speak, regain mobility in his arms and fingers, and perform daily kinesiology exercises and swallowing work.
In this context of progress, the family experienced a decisive moment for the healing stage: the child reconnected with Melina Santillán, the pediatric intensive-care physician who treated him on the beach immediately after the impact and whose intervention was decisive in keeping him alive.
