The death of Oscar “the Negro” González Oro left deep sadness among his colleagues. One of them was Beto Casella, who said that he shared a very affectionate bond with the host and that they used to stay in touch by text messages. Reflecting on their last conversation, he revealed what he had told him last Saturday.
“The health isn’t on my side. I can’t walk well and my balance is failing,” González Oro confided to him, Casella recounted upon the news of his death.
Beto explained that he had written to him especially that day because he knew the Negro wasn’t well. He also recalled that he had seen him thinner. His account gave voice to a concern that existed among those who kept in touch with him: behind the energetic voice they had often heard, González Oro was going through difficulties in his daily life.
The health problems that El Negro González Oro had disclosed
The journalist himself had spoken about these changes last year, during an interview with A la Tarde. He said that he found it hard to walk, that he sometimes lost his balance, and that his physical condition had influenced his decision not to travel to Madrid to visit his children.
“I decided not to travel anymore to see my children because my body won’t hold up,” he had said. He also expressed the pain of feeling different in front of Paulo and Agustín: “My children were used to their dad being able to do everything.”
The conversation Casella recalled today gains emotional weight due to his closeness to the host’s death. As of now, no official cause of death has been reported, so the health problems he mentioned do not allow determining what he died from.
González Oro passed away this Friday, September 25, at 74 years old in Uruguay, where he had lived since 2020. For Casella, the memory remains of that last exchange by message and of a colleague with whom he had built a close relationship, even after El Negro stepped away from mass media.
