The news of Hayden Panettiere’s death at 36 shocked the international entertainment world. The actress, globally renowned for her roles in Heroes and Nashville, died on August 16 in Greenville, South Carolina.
For more than a month, the cause of her death remained officially undetermined and various versions circulated about what happened. Now, the Greenville County Medical Examiner’s Office has released the autopsy results and confirmed how the actress died.

According to the coroner’s report, Hayden Panettiere’s death was accidental and occurred due to the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine. The confirmation was released on Tuesday, September 22.
4-ANPP is a compound associated with the manufacture of fentanyl. Alprazolam is the active ingredient in medications commercially known as Xanax, while methocarbamol is a muscle relaxant and quetiapine is a medication used to treat certain mental health conditions.
The report also indicated that the autopsy did not find signs of trauma that could have contributed to the death. The Greenville police had previously noted there were no initial indications of violence or suspicious circumstances.
The official confirmation comes after, in the hours following her death, various versions circulated about what happened. Even information linked to a 911 call and a possible overdose surfaced, but until now that hypothesis had not been officially confirmed.
How Hayden Panettiere Was Found
On August 16, around 1:51 p.m., emergency services received a call reporting a cardiac arrest at a Greenville residence where Panettiere was temporarily staying.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found the actress unconscious and in cardiac arrest. They began resuscitation efforts and advanced life-support measures, but could not save her. Hayden was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.
In the home were her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach, according to reports released after the death.
