An Australian woman gave birth to identical quadruplets in a case so rare that it was described as “unprecedented” by the medical team. The birth followed a pregnancy conceived naturally and was deemed “extremely high risk” by the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
The four babies were delivered by cesarean on July 14, after reaching 28 weeks and four days of gestation. They are monozygotic quadruplets, meaning they originated from a single fertilized egg that split into four embryos and shared the same placenta.
The mothers of the little ones, Jenitar Na’amoana, 34, and her husband Jortham, were already parents to four children aged between one and ten. The couple were met with an enormous surprise when they were told they were expecting quadruplets, bringing their total to eight children at home.
A Strict Medical Follow-Up and a Special Tribute
Dr. Alexa Bendall, an obstetrician and specialist in maternal-fetal medicine, accompanied Na’amoana from the outset. Bendall estimated that identical quadruplets occur “in one in 15 million pregnancies” and highlighted that sharing the same placenta is highly unusual.
Due to the high risk of the pregnancy, the hospital decided to admit Na’amoana at 25 weeks to monitor her continuously. The medical team’s goal was to reach Week 28 of gestation to reduce potential complications.
“We always said that if we could reach 28 weeks, we would be doing a good job,” explained Dr. Bendall. The specialist added: “The fact that we have four beautiful and healthy babies born at 28 weeks and four days is incredible, and we are very happy to be part of it.”
The newborns were named Emily, Harriet, Catherine, and Alexa. The latter name was chosen in honor of Dr. Bendall, who described it as “a beautiful tribute.” The babies remain in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit until they are fully developed and are currently extraordinarily well.
According to the obstetrician, the mother has faced everything with fortitude from day one and managed to avoid complications for both her health and that of the babies during the process.
The Challenge of Caring for Eight Children and a Charitable Campaign
With the arrival of the newborns, the family had to reorganize their daily logistics. To tackle this new phase, Na’amoana recently launched a virtual fundraising campaign to acquire a ten-seat minivan.
The philanthropic effort has already surpassed $25,000 in donations. In the campaign post, the mother shared her feelings about the moment they are living as a family.
“Our four precious miracles have arrived safe and sound, and although our hearts overflow with gratitude, the reality of caring for four newborns at once has brought challenges we never could have imagined,” wrote Na’amoana.
While general medical estimates indicate that natural-conception quadruplet births occur in about one in 700,000 pregnancies, the fact that they are identical and shared the same placenta makes this an extraordinary medical milestone.
